Why Use Exotic Metals in Gaskets?

The majority of the gaskets we manufacture at AMG on a daily basis involve low-carbon steel and copper, we do have customers that require us to work with more exotic metals, like Monel, Hastelloy and Inconel.  These metals are typically used to produce gaskets in high temperature environments or those involving caustic chemicals.

Characteristics & Applications of Exotic Metals

Monel

Monel is a group of nickel alloys primarily composed of nickel (up to 67%) and copper, with small amounts of iron, manganese, carbon, and silicon, offers unique properties Monel gaskets are preferred in applications where their unique combination of high strength, excellent corrosion resistance (especially in marine and harsh chemical environments), and resistance to high temperatures and pressures.

Marine Engineering:
Monel alloys are highly resistant to seawater corrosion, as well as to rapidly flowing brackish water or saltwater. They are also resistant to biofouling.

Chemical Processing:
Monel’s excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive chemicals, including acids, alkalis, and salt solutions, makes it suitable for use with chemical processing equipment.

Oil & Gas Industry:
Monel is suitable for sour gas applications where hydrogen sulfide and other corrosive gases are present. It is used in valves, pumps, shafts, and fasteners in oil extraction and processing equipment.

Aerospace Applications:
The high strength and resistance to corrosion at elevated temperatures make Monel suitable for aerospace applications, including exhaust systems and turbine seals.

Power Generation:
Monel’s resistance to steam and hot water corrosion makes it suitable for use in steam turbine generators and nuclear power plant applications, particularly in gaskets used in steam generator parts.

Desalination Plants:
The alloy’s resistance to corrosion in saltwater makes it ideal for desalination plants, especially in multi-stage flash distillation plants where brine and hot water can be corrosive.

Hastelloy

Hastelloy, a group of nickel-based alloys, is known for its outstanding resistance to high-temperature, high-stress environments, particularly those involving corrosive chemicals. Hastelloy gaskets are best suited for applications where extreme corrosion resistance, durability under high temperatures, and material integrity in aggressive chemical environments are crucial.

Chemical Processing Industry:
Hastelloy alloys are exceptionally resistant to a wide range of chemical environments, including strong acids (such as sulfuric, hydrochloric, hydrofluoric, and phosphoric acids) and alkalis making them ideal for use in reactors, heat exchangers, and piping systems in chemical plants.

Petrochemical Industry:
The petrochemical industry often involves corrosive substances and high temperatures. Hastelloy’s resistance to oxidizing and reducing agents makes it suitable for valves, pumps, and other components exposed to crude oil and natural gas products.

Environmental Technologies:
Equipment used in flue gas desulfurization, waste treatment, and pollution control systems often encounters corrosive substances and high temperatures. Hastelloy gaskets are used in these applications due to their ability to withstand such harsh conditions.

Power Generation:
In power plants, especially those using geothermal, nuclear, or coal-fired technologies, components are exposed to high temperatures and corrosive media. Hastelloy’s high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance make it suitable for turbine blades, heat exchangers, and other critical components.

Inconel

Inconel, a family of nickel-chromium-based superalloys, is known for its exceptional resistance to extreme temperatures, oxidation, and corrosion. Inconel gaskets are best suited for applications requiring materials that can withstand extreme temperatures, high pressures, and corrosive environments without losing their mechanical properties.

Aerospace Industry:
Inconel alloys can withstand extreme heat and pressure, making them ideal for aerospace applications, including engine turbines, exhaust systems, and heat shields. They maintain strength over a wide temperature range, essential for the varying conditions experienced in aerospace environments.

Marine Engineering:
Its resistance to seawater and salt spray corrosion makes Inconel suitable for marine applications. Inconel offers superior strength and durability, especially at high temperatures or under mechanical stress.

High-performance automotive applications, such as exhaust systems in racing cars, benefit from Inconel’s ability to resist extreme heat and corrosive environments, maintaining integrity under the high-temperature conditions generated by high-speed engines.
